IBS/Business News and Analysis/Professor Shihmin Lo/Full English Class
Specialty Electives/Business News and Analysis/Full English Class/IBS subfield
The EMI elective is a "required" course in the Department of IBS!
"Business Current Affairs Analysis" carefully selects the latest business current affairs multimedia topics through "駱駱"(Professor Lo). It is composed of students from different grades and departments who learn together. Adopting flipped classroom and mind mapping tools, in a specially designed English-friendly learning environment, students can repeatedly practice listening, speaking, reading, and writing in English language and business content. After one semester, naturally, the mastery of international business current affairs and English usage will make significant progress without realizing it!
In this course, before class, you will collaborate with your group members using Coggle, an online mind mapping tool, to complete autonomous learning and analysis on assigned topics. In addition to all-English presentations and Q&A sessions during class, Professor Lo also encourages students to have more direct interaction within and between groups through problem-based learning (PBL) in class activities. Throughout the semester, each group can choose a topic of interest for the term project and participate in a video competition at the end of the term, allowing each group to apply what they have learned to their chosen topic content and analysis. Welcome to interested students to further understand the course content through the course outline in the academic system. Also, welcome students from other departments, just come to the classroom on the first day of class to add the course!
Student Experience:
- I think this course is great, and I've learned a lot from it. It's a fantastic class.
- The course is very enriching. Following the weekly learning progress, you can understand many ongoing events and new trends in industries. What's particularly special is that it's an all-English course (the teacher also explains difficult parts in Chinese if needed). I struggled with the decision to take it at first, but looking back, I'm glad I tried. It's a great opportunity to practice English (especially speaking), and there's no need to worry about not being good at English; everyone just needs to communicate. Even if you can't understand, your group members are super enthusiastic and helpful in answering questions. Many international students choose this course, and I've made quite a few foreign friends in this class! There's a video competition at the end of the term where everyone gets to showcase their creativity in a 15-minute video. It's not easy, but it's super fun!(From Dcard)
- Back in my freshman year, brimming with enthusiasm, I scrolled through the course selection system. The moment I saw the "all-English" course, I felt a surge of ambition and without hesitation, I chose this course. Professor Lolo is a teacher who values student participation greatly. Even though it's an all-English course, he considers students' levels and makes timely adjustments. Communication is crucial in this course, both with the teacher and with team members, as there's a group presentation every week. Therefore, after completing this course, I feel that the greatest takeaway is the courage to express my thoughts and opinions, and I'm no longer afraid to speak in front of others. This isn't an easy breezy course to slack off in, but if you actively participate in class, even if your English proficiency isn't strong, Professor Lolo will still give you sweet scores.꒰ ´͈ω`͈꒱(From Dcard)
